What is text neck?

Text neck is the colloquial term for what chiropractors call “forward head posture.” Ideally, you would hold your neck and spine in a neutral upright position when using a device like a smartphone – but that’s not always possible or comfortable. Unfortunately, not addressing text neck early enough can contribute to spinal changes and degeneration.

When you hold a frequent forward head posture, you’re putting undue strain on the muscles and connective tissues in your neck. While the upper cervical spine goes into hyperflexion, the lower cervical sign is hyperextended. This hurts the discs and vertebrae and puts tension on the spinal cord. Over time, this can cause issues, such as:

  • Degenerating discs: Your intervertebral discs are meant to help support your vertebrae and foster a healthy range of motion. When your discs start to break down, you naturally lose some or all of this function. What’s worse is that a stressed disc’s interior fluid can leak, causing pain and swelling when it comes into contact with nerves or muscles.
  • Worn-down facet joints: Each one of your vertebrae has a small facet joint that allows motion in between them. Over time, with strain and trauma, the cartilage in these joints breaks down. Since the cartilage is there to facilitate smooth gliding between the joint, this can cause additional spinal pain.
  • Bone grinding against bone: When your spinal discs and facet joints wear down, your bones can grind against each other. This can cause bone spurs and is extremely painful, especially when the spurs irritate nearby muscles, ligaments, and nerves.

Symptoms of text neck include neck and upper back pain, as well as headaches that radiate from the upper cervical spine. In some cases, you may experience tingling and numbness radiating down your shoulders and arms.
